The defense ministers of Venezuela and Colombia, Vladímir Padrino López and Iván Velásquez Gómez, respectively, met to strengthen communication and establish a plan aimed at collaborating in the consolidation of peace in Colombia. According to a statement from the Venezuelan Ministry of Defense, they agreed to share successful experiences to provide support to Colombia in this process.
During the meeting, Venezuela's willingness to continue providing humanitarian assistance to Colombian citizens affected by clashes in the Catatumbo region, who have sought refuge on Venezuelan soil, was highlighted. The Venezuelan government's commitment to closely collaborate with Colombian authorities to address any needs that contribute to resolving issues in the area was emphasized.
Padrino López stressed that Venezuela, in line with its diplomatic and pacifist policy, has acted as a mediator in Colombia's armed conflict at the request of the Colombian Government, respecting the self-determination of peoples and international law at all times. Venezuela's commitment to peace in Colombia and its willingness to continue collaborating in building a peaceful scenario in the region were reaffirmed.
Both countries agreed to implement a three-month plan to address the situation at the border, particularly in the Catatumbo sector, in the Norte de Santander department, where clashes have led to massive displacements and loss of life. Venezuela highlighted its work in combating various forms of criminal organization, including transnational crimes, as part of joint efforts to maintain stability in the region.
It is noteworthy that the Colombian Government recently declared a state of internal commotion in several municipalities in the northeast of the country in response to the crisis triggered by the National Liberation Army (ELN) offensive in the Catatumbo region, which has resulted in a high number of victims and displaced individuals.
