IATA warns airlines suspending Venezuela flights could lose traffic rights

Geneva, Nov 25 (EFE). - The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which brings together 300 airlines worldwide, clarified that the companies that could lose their traffic rights in Venezuela, after receiving a warning from the National Civil Aviation Institute (INAC), are those that have suspended their flights.

The order to resume flights within a maximum period of 48 hours, which IATA itself reported on Monday, "mainly affects the companies that had already announced the temporary suspension," the airline association consulted by EFE emphasized. Among the airlines that have suspended their flights, after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration urged to "exercise extreme caution" when flying over Venezuelan territory and the southern Caribbean, are the Spanish airlines Iberia, Air Europa and Plus Ultra, as well as TAP, Avianca, Latam, Turkish Airlines and GOL, all of them IATA members.

"We emphasize that member airlines remain committed to restoring operations as soon as conditions allow," said a press officer for the association.

The day before, IATA warned Venezuelan authorities that the order given to airlines could further reduce connectivity to the country, which is already low compared to others in the region.

It emphasized that flight suspensions are "temporary measures, adopted after rigorous risk analysis to guarantee the safety of passengers, crews and aircraft."
