Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro held a phone call with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday, against the backdrop of "escalating threats" from the United States, which announced a partial embargo on Venezuelan oil shipments.
Maduro warned that the campaign by US President Donald Trump against him carries "serious consequences for regional peace," according to a statement from the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A separate statement from Guterres's spokesperson said that the UN Secretary-General is working to "avoid further escalation" between Washington and Caracas.
