Venezuela begins process to select new Ombudsman

The Government Commission of the National Assembly began this Monday, March 30, the process of interviewing candidates for the position of Ombudsman, a key stage for the renewal of the entity responsible for protecting human rights in the country. Among the 35 applicants who, according to official records, have expressed their interest, three figures stand out for their trajectory and public profile: the current Ombudsman, Eduardo Leblanc González, who seeks to extend his term; the former magistrate Ángela Russo, with a consolidated career in the judicial field; and the alternate deputy Ricardo Valencia, whose candidacy arises from the partisan political arena. The process, which is taking place amid expectations about the independence and institutional direction of the Ombudsman's Office, brings contrasting visions about the role of the body to the table.
