Venezuela Releases American Prisoners

Venezuela began releasing American citizens held in its prisons on Tuesday, an U.S. official said, praising the step taken by the interim leadership in Caracas after Washington ousted President Nicolás Maduro. Meanwhile, the platform 'X' has once again become available in the country, after Maduro had blocked it for over a year. An official from the State Department, who requested anonymity, stated: 'We welcome the release of Americans detained in Venezuela. It is an important step in the right direction by the interim authorities.' Maduro's deputy, Delcy Rodríguez, who became the country's acting president, ordered the release of prisoners following the U.S. attack. President Donald Trump praised this initiative, saying that in response, he canceled a second wave of strikes. Many individuals were imprisoned for participating in protests against the 2024 elections, in which Maduro was declared the winner despite allegations of fraud. Earlier, Venezuela had released Spanish and Italian citizens from its prisons. The United States has always made the release of its citizens imprisoned abroad a top priority and secured the freedom of some of them in a deal with Maduro last year. Separately, the platform 'X' has once again become available in Venezuela after Maduro had banned it for over a year. Rodríguez wrote on her account on the platform: 'We are resuming communication through this platform (X) to stay united and move towards economic stability, social justice, and the welfare state we deserve to aspire to.'
