The government of Venezuela has released more than 400 political prisoners, as confirmed today by the president of the National Assembly (Parliament), Jorge Rodríguez, within the framework of the release process that was launched after the arrest of former president Nicolás Maduro. "To date, more than 400 people have been released," Rodríguez specified in his statements, while clarifying that the first 160 were released on December 23 of last year. The parliamentarian explained that the process was unilaterally promoted by the national Executive, at the behest of the National Council for Sovereignty and Peace, as part of a strategy to strengthen national unity. According to what Argentine News agency learned, Rodríguez pointed out that the released individuals do not correspond to the category of political prisoners, but rather to political actors who committed offenses against the law and the Constitution. Finally, the President of the Parliament emphasized that the process implies a call for rectification and political responsibility as necessary conditions to consolidate peaceful coexistence.
