Rodriguez Proposes New Social Code as Strategic Priority for Venezuela

The president of the Venezuelan Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, proposed the drafting of a new Venezuelan Social Code as a strategic priority for the 2026-2031 legislative period. The goal is to systematize and update the country's legal framework to face the economic, social, and environmental challenges of the new decade. The proposal was announced on Wednesday during the act of notifying the Executive Branch of the formal start of the new legislative period before the Acting President of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez. The head of the Legislative branch emphasized that the defense of sovereignty, freedom, and constitutional independence constitute the absolute priority of the Parliament elected on May 25, 2025, while reaffiring institutional cohesion in the face of recent threats and aggressions against the country. In this sense, Rodríguez expressed the National Assembly's willingness to work in a coordinated manner with the Executive Branch and the Venezuelan people to preserve peace, boost economic growth, and contribute to the restoration of national prosperity. In this context, he raised the need for a comprehensive reform of the legal system through a Social Code that systematizes and modernizes legislation, incorporating key areas such as the economy, civil law, environmental protection, and care for people in vulnerable situations. The project, as explained, seeks to offer a coherent and adapted to contemporary realities legal instrument that strengthens a model of social justice and development of its own, without subordination to external pressures. With this notification to the Executive, the National Assembly concluded the formal cycle for the start of the parliamentary year, having previously informed the other Public Powers, and ratified that its legislative work will be oriented towards the stability of the country and the defense of the national interest.
