Russia Calls on US to Stop Escalation of Tension Around Venezuela

Russia's Foreign Ministry has accused the US of deliberately escalating tensions with Venezuela, calling for de-escalation and respect for international law. Venezuela has dismissed drug trafficking accusations as lies and vowed to continue oil exports.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is witnessing «an uninterrupted and deliberate escalation of tension» around the Latin American country.

«Latin America and the Caribbean must remain a zone of peace that guarantees the stable and independent development of the region's countries,» the ministry said in a statement. «We reaffirm our solidarity with the Venezuelan people in the face of the trials they are undergoing, as well as our support for the line of the government of Nicolás Maduro, aimed at defending the national interests and sovereignty of the homeland,» the communiqué concludes.

Previously, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, Yván Gil Pinto, thanked Russia for rejecting the aggressive actions of the United States.

«The words of the illustrious son of Latin America, Simón Bolívar, remain fully valid: ‘Each people has the right to choose its own rulers, and other countries must respect that choice.’»

From the Russian Foreign Ministry, they indicated that the country «consistently defends the normalization of dialogue between Washington and Caracas».

«We are convinced that steps are necessary to de-escalate the situation and to find solutions to the existing problems and disagreements in a constructive manner and with respect for the norms of international law».

On Wednesday, the United States carried out a new «lethal kinetic» attack against a supposed narco-boat in the Pacific, causing the death of the four crew members. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro called the US argument about the fight against drug trafficking «fake news» and «a lie».

«Since they cannot say that we have weapons of mass destruction, that we have chemical weapons, nuclear rockets, they invent a pretext to create another Afghanistan, another Libya,» he explained.

The Latin American country made it clear that it will maintain its oil exports despite the «illegal blockade» and will enforce its rights in terms of trade and freedom of navigation. Numerous countries around the world condemned the actions of Washington, which Caracas described as «piracy».
