Venezuela Warns of Military Threat to Caribbean Stability

A Venezuelan delegation warned on Tuesday in The Hague that stability in the Caribbean is facing a 'threatened' scenario due to the 'unprecedented' U.S. military deployment in the region. This position was presented during the Assembly of States Parties of the International Criminal Court (ICC), where Venezuela's Permanent Representative to the ICC, Héctor Constant Rosales, stated that these operations aim to 'affect the sovereignty' of Venezuela and pose risks to 'a region that loves peace', reported Xinhua news agency. In this way, the official affirmed that the Venezuelan delegation attended the international forum to 'alert and condemn these hegemonic actions that today threaten regional peace'. Furthermore, the diplomat linked this situation to a climate of 'intimidation' that he said weighs on the ICC's work as a result of 'sanctions, threats, and political pressures' directed at prosecutors and judges. Practices that, in his view, seek to stall investigations and condition the Court's decisions. Likewise, the ambassador reiterated that Venezuela, 'as a sovereign state', has the authority to conduct its criminal processes without foreign interference, and added that international justice cannot become an instrument of 'selective domination' or operate with 'a double standard' that, in his opinion, ultimately benefits the most powerful actors to the detriment of countries that claim independence and sovereignty.
