Venezuelan Opposition Leader Guanipa Placed Under House Arrest

Venezuelan authorities have transferred opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa to his residence in Maracaibo to serve house arrest, after being detained again on Sunday for allegedly violating the conditions of a release that lasted only a few hours, his son reported on Tuesday. The 61-year-old leader is a close ally of Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado. Guanipa was released on Sunday after nine months in detention on charges of conspiracy. Following his release, he visited the families of political prisoners, toured Caracas in a motorcade, chanted slogans, and demanded new elections. Shortly before dawn, he was detained again. "He is at my home in Maracaibo," wrote his son Ramón Guanipa on the leader's social media X account. "My father remains unjustly imprisoned, because house arrest is still prison, and we demand his full freedom and that of all political prisoners," he added. Guanipa also thanked the U.S. government "for its work in favor of the freedom of Venezuela and all political prisoners." In the same vein, via his X account, Ramón Guanipa thanked U.S. Senator Rick Scott for his support. The prosecution argued that he violated his parole and requested house arrest.
