Venezuela continues to release political prisoners following the passage of an amnesty law. On Saturday, at least 12 individuals were freed from a detention center in eastern Caracas known as 'Zona 7.' Among the released was Renny Chourio, who stated that around 23 people would be freed 'progressively.' The Venezuelan government has not yet confirmed this number or published a list of those amnestied. Activist Omar Torres, also released, mentioned he must report to court every 30 days as part of his precautionary measures. Other freed individuals included labor leader Gilberto Alcalá, who was arrested 'for demanding workers' rights.' According to the NGO Foro Penal, 639 people have been released since January 8. However, the amnesty law, passed by the chavismo-controlled legislature, does not cover all political prisoners, as it covers a period from 1999 to 2026 and is linked to 13 specific events. On Friday, the NGO 'Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners' reported that over 30 prisoners remained in Zona 7. Authorities deny the existence of political prisoners, claiming all were arrested for committing crimes.
