Over 3,000 Released from Venezuelan Prisons

Venezuela has released over 3,000 prisoners under a new amnesty law. Commission President Jorge Arreaza confirmed that 3,052 people were fully released as they already had precautionary measures. The law does not apply to those convicted of serious crimes.

Buenos Aires, February 24 (NA) — Over 3,000 people were released this Tuesday from Venezuelan prisons, confirmed Jorge Arreaza, president of the Special Commission for the Follow-up of the Amnesty Law for Democratic Coexistence of the National Assembly. 'Full releases were granted to 3,052 people who already had a precautionary measure,' Arreaza stated after concluding the parliamentary commission's meeting at the seat of the Federal Legislative Palace in Caracas. The deputy of the National Assembly also specified that, as of this Tuesday morning, 4,203 applications had been received to access the benefit of the amnesty. According to Noticias Argentinas agency, the Law of Amnesty for Democratic Coexistence was approved last week in a second discussion, following the incursion of U.S. forces that arrested former President Nicolás Maduro. The law does not include amnesty for those convicted of human rights violations, war crimes, murder, drug trafficking, or corruption.
