Venezuela is calm after the U.S. attack, stated the country's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez. She emphasized that the national clamor is for the release of President Maduro and his wife, Deputy Cilia Flores.
In an address on the state television channel VTV, Rodríguez mentioned that she has spoken by phone in recent days with U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. She advocated for respect as the only path to resolving differences.
«If there is one thing that has united Venezuelans, it is their rejection of this type of aggression. The differences, controversies, and divergences with the U.S. government must be handled diplomatically through political dialogue,» she stressed.
Rodríguez also stated that Venezuela has «transmuted and matured» after the U.S. attack, which left a death toll of over a hundred, including civilians and military personnel. She expressed confidence that the country can overcome its differences through hard work.
Nicolás Maduro remains in a U.S. prison and is accused of four federal charges, including conspiracy to commit narcoterrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine, as well as collaborating with criminal organizations designated as terrorist by Washington.
Following Maduro's capture on January 5, Delcy Rodríguez assumed the role of acting president. She has initiated an «exploratory» process to resume diplomatic relations with the U.S., agreed to the sale of oil to the country, and pushed for a reform of the hydrocarbons law to attract private and foreign investment in the sector.
