Venezuela Dismisses Industry Minister Alex Saab

Venezuela's Acting President Delsy Rodriguez has dismissed Industry Minister Alex Saab. Saab was one of the main chavist intermediaries in the world. The Colombian-born businessman significantly strengthened oil relations between Venezuela and Iran in the face of US sanctions. Maduro appointed him Minister of Industry in December 2024. He was exchanged in December 2023 for 10 Americans who were imprisoned in Venezuela, in an operation that Maduro described as a "victory." Saab was arrested in 2021 and detained in the United States on charges of setting up a system to divert food aid to the benefit of Maduro and his government.
