Venezuela Plans to 'Rescue' Maduro

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, was arrested last week by US forces along with his wife Cilia Flores. Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, stated that during her tenure she plans to 'rescue' Maduro. 'Today, a year later, we are swearing for his freedom,' Rodríguez pointed out. She also emphasized that national unity around what she called the 'rescue' of Maduro will be fundamental: 'We are going to rescue him, of course, yes.' During a community activity in the state of Miranda, she exclaimed: 'There is no government, the president's Maduro (...) Let's keep marching together, let's keep marching united, guaranteeing happiness, guaranteeing life, guaranteeing the future, guaranteeing peace!' She also stressed that the Venezuelan people can count on her commitment and loyalty: 'We will not rest for a minute until we have the president back, the first fighter (first lady), we will not rest, we swore,' she emphasized. On January 3, US military forces entered Venezuelan territory and bombed Caracas and three other cities in the center of the country. 'With the unity of our people, we are going to rescue him,' she reiterated. In this sense, the head of state indicated that 'There are no levels of uncertainty here, the Venezuelan people rule here.'
